Chapter Four

Josh didn’t say a single word for the rest of the drive back to town. Stone wondered if he’d pissed off his mate by essentially inviting himself into his home or if he’d been right about Josh getting ready to run. The intriguing scent of lanolin and prey continued to cycle around desperation and fear. The one silver lining in the dark cloud was the soft, delicate arousal tickling his senses every once in a while. Stone clung to the knowledge that Josh felt the attraction brewing between them.

Desperate to connect with the animal side of his mate, Stone’s wolf paced back and forth in his head. He’d never met another wolf like Josh or one with his talent for maintaining his humanity. Even when he’d been terrified by the asshole in the pet shop, his wolf never surfaced to protect him. Stone didn’t know many omegas, but even the gentlest wolf should snarl when cornered. Josh’s wolf must have been beaten into extreme submission; it was the only logical explanation. Stone’s heart broke, making him wish he’d torn Eddie apart when he had the chance.

There would be another opportunity and it pacified his wolf for the moment. He’d known many “Eddies” over the years, stupid wolves happy to follow orders when it suited their own sick, depraved needs. They craved perversion and violence, and Stone didn’t lose a moment’s sleep over the few he’d challenged and killed.

Keeping Josh tucked close to his side went a long way toward calming his wolf. He liked the softness of Josh’s thin dreadlocks and couldn’t wait to grip them when he claimed his sweet ass. His mate might be distracted by his thoughts at the moment, but Stone was hyperaware of every part of his body touching him. A plan for how he could seduce his mate and hopefully entice his wolf out of hiding began to form.

“Stone, why did you come to the shop last night?”

Damn, shitty timing. He’d wanted to put his seduction plan into action before Josh remembered to ask about last night. “I’d mentioned to Drew I wanted to buy your building.”

“And I ruined your plans.”

“No, not it at all.” He didn’t want to give Josh any excuse to leave. “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed, but then Drew mentioned you might not need the entire store space for your string.”

“It’s yarn.”

“Right, Yarn. I’d planned to ask if you would be interested in renting out part of the building. The moment you opened the door, my whole world changed.”

“Oh.” Josh fell silent again, relaxing against Stone’s side. His wolf settled, knowing his mate was so close. Wrapping his arm across Josh’s shoulder, he steadied him while navigating the treacherous road into town. They were just pulling up in front of the building when Josh spoke again.

“Do you need special plumbing or anything?”

“Nope, a sink and electrical.” Stone’s heart jumped a beat at the prospect of having his own place so close to his mate’s.

“Oh.” Josh didn’t say anything more and Stone didn’t press him.
